Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Fox hunting is a sport deeply rooted in two essential elements: the hounds and the land. At Wateree Hounds Hunt, while we are equipped with the hounds, the vast lands we traverse are not our own. Our hunting activities rely heavily on the graciousness of local farmers and residents who lend us their land. Without their generosity, our hunting endeavors would not be possible. We are continually seeking new property owners to join our community, whether they participate on horseback, on foot, or simply enjoy the camaraderie and the natural beauty of the surroundings. If you're considering allowing our club to use your land for hunting, or if you're already one of our supportive landowners, we've compiled answers to some frequently asked questions.

WILL THIS DISTURB MY LIVESTOCK OR DAMAGE MY CROPS?

No. Our hounds are trained not to chase any livestock. Our riders are instructed to close gates, avoid herds, and stay clear of crop fields, following directives from the hunt masters. Many of our members are landowners themselves and understand the importance of respecting property. Should you observe any conduct by a hound or rider that contradicts this policy, please report it to the Masters for immediate action and rectification.

WHAT ABOUT LIABILITY IF SOMEONE IS INJURED ON MY PROPERTY?

In South Carolina, there's a statutory law that shields landowners from liability for injuries to individuals engaging in recreational activities on their property, which includes hunting and horseback riding. Provided no fee is charged, the law stipulates that landowners are not obligated to ensure the safety of the premises for such activities or to warn about any potential hazards. Additionally, all members of our hunt sign a waiver, offering further protection against liability for both the landowner and the hunt.

CAN Wateree Hounds Hunt ACCESS MY PROPERTY ANYTIME, OR CAN I CONTROL ACCESS TIMES?

It’s your land and we are only guests so we only access your property with your explicit permission. Unless you've given specific consent, our presence is limited to hunting times. As a landowner, you'll receive our Fixture schedule, detailing the start locations for each hunt and indicating if your property might be involved. We respect your preferences regarding timing and access. Moreover, in gratitude for your generosity in allowing us trail access, we commit to maintaining these trails throughout the year, always with your permission.

HOW LARGE AN AREA IS REQUIRED FOR HUNTING?

Ideally, we need a minimum continuous expanse of 1000 acres for effective hunting. While large properties are preferred, we often navigate across multiple smaller properties during a hunt. Even a modest-sized land parcel can be crucial, or simply granting us permission to retrieve our hounds from your property is immensely valuable. We encourage you to contact our masters with any questions or concerns.

WHY SHOULD I ALLOW Wateree Hounds Hunt ON MY PROPERTY?

The presence of Wateree Hounds in Camden and the greater Kershaw County area symbolizes the enduring legacy of Fox Hunting in the region, a tradition that has thrived for nearly a century despite urban encroachment. This is largely due to the dedication of those who cherish hunting and the country sporting life. We champion the cause of open-space conservation and the preservation of the rural essence of our community.

We hope all landowners who open their gates to us feel welcome to participate in our sport and our community. Landowners receive our Hunting Fixture, detailing our seasonal hunting schedule, and are welcome at our tailgates and other social gatherings. Even if your contribution is as simple as allowing us to collect stray hounds, we are immensely grateful and eager to extend our hospitality to you.
