Your Gateway to Premier Fox Hunting, Community Polo and Conservation in Camden.
Welcome to the Wateree Hounds
Founded in 2020, Wateree Hounds stands as a testament to Camden's rich equestrian heritage, blending time-honored fox hunting traditions with modern sporting excellence. As we enter our 5th season, our organization has quickly become a cornerstone of the southeastern Midlands of South Carolina's vibrant equestrian community.
At the heart of our organization is a formidable pack of meticulously selected foxhounds. Known for their stamina, keen noses, and unwavering drive, these exceptional hounds are the ultimate companions in the exhilarating pursuit of quarry. Their compliant and eager-to-please nature allows us to navigate challenging landscapes with unyielding determination, showcasing their unparalleled tracking prowess across varied terrains.
Wateree Hounds enjoys access to over 20,000 acres of pristine countryside, made possible by the generosity of dedicated landowners and conservation initiatives. Our diverse hunting grounds span historic plantations, state parks, and unique geological features, each offering its own charm and challenges. From the Civil War-era MacBurn Plantation to the rolling hills of Brewer's Plantation, and from the Piedmont environment of H. Cooper Black State Park to the distinctive Sugarloaf Mountain, our territory provides an unparalleled backdrop for our sporting adventures.
Our name pays homage to the meandering Wateree River and the indigenous tribes who once thrived on its fertile banks, reflecting our deep respect for the land we traverse and its rich history. This connection to our heritage fuels our commitment to land conservation and responsible stewardship, ensuring these beautiful landscapes remain preserved for future generations.
With a growing membership of over 120 riders, Wateree Hounds is more than just a sporting club - we're a thriving community. Our activities extend beyond the traditional hunting season, offering year-round events that blend fox hunting, equestrian pursuits, and social gatherings. From Summer Hound Exercises to our signature Wateree Polo Classic and starting in 2025 our first ever Wateree Hounds Sporting Week, we provide numerous opportunities for members to engage in outdoor recreation and build lasting friendships.
At Wateree Hounds, we pride ourselves on balancing tradition with innovation. While we carry forward the time-honored practice of fox hunting, we also embrace modern approaches to community engagement and conservation. Our focus on land preservation and fostering a strong equine economy in the region demonstrates our commitment to being responsible stewards of both our sport and our environment.
As we continue to grow and evolve, Wateree Hounds remains dedicated to providing an exceptional fox hunting experience while nurturing a sense of camaraderie among our members. We invite you to join us in celebrating Camden's equestrian legacy, experiencing the thrill of the hunt, and becoming part of a community that values tradition, sportsmanship, and the breathtaking beauty of our South Carolina landscapes.
Welcome to Wateree Hounds - where every ride is an extraordinary journey through history, nature, and shared passion.

“Do not approach the sport faint-heartedly or you will miss the uplift of spirit that it can provide. Those who must wait for perfect weather and footing seldom go out fox hunting.”
